“I have always loved Erik Satie!
His direct and sensitive music …
His exquisite taste in titles,
His sense of derision,
His art of provocation,
His collection of umbrellas!
By paraphrasing one of his titles, I wanted to pay homage to him, and even if the xylophone was not his favorite instrument, I am amused to think that the pieces of this collection could have made him smile… a bit.
The word Xylopedie is a combination of xylophone and “pedie”, a suffix related to education.
The sonority of this title is close to Erik Satie’s Gymnopédies, which are either dances that had to support the morale of the Spartans, or a word combining gymnastics and encyclopedia …
The special touch that xylophonists must develop to make their instrument work can be an asset in their approach to other percussion instruments. I propose in this collection of short pieces (between 1 and 3 minutes approximately) which stroll in a universe a little crazy but always related to the expression to the sensitivity and the phrasing”.
